IW Magazine ─ Architectural Perspective and Design Details of Wandering Walls

September 2020・Issue 135 (Architectural Aesthetics Feature) | October 2020・Spatial Design Detail Planning 2021 Edition

When IW Magazine featured Wandering Walls in two consecutive issues, this retreat in Hengchun Peninsula was no longer seen merely as accommodation, but as an architectural work under close examination and media attention. The September issue focused on “how architecture responds to its environment,” emphasizing how Wandering Walls employs curved walls to channel wind and terrain. The October issue went further, revealing detailed drawings and construction nodes, presenting the full journey from concept to realization.

For us, this was not only an honor but also a validation of long-held persistence. From architectural philosophy and material choices to construction methods, every decision revolved around “coexistence with nature.” Whether it was the three concrete curved walls guiding the katabatic winds, or the textured mosaic brick walls shifting with the play of light and shadow, Wandering Walls sought to become an “extension of nature” itself.

The most challenging aspect was the self-developed mosaic brick wall technique. This method demanded extreme precision, and no contractor was willing to take on the task. In the end, Gavin and the house manager carried out the work themselves, spending nearly half a year handcrafting each wall brick by brick. This experience was not merely a construction story but a belief: when design collides with reality, the only way to ensure ideals are realized is to “do it with your own hands.”

  • Architectural Feature: Issue 135 explored curved walls, light, and circulation from an aesthetic lens.
  • Detail Planning: The annual edition revealed wall vocabularies and construction nodes for professional readers.
  • Mosaic Technique: A self-developed method, completed by hand over six months, became an iconic detail of Wandering Walls.
  • Coexistence with Nature: Low-saturation materials and anti-salt-weathering strategies addressed the coastal environment.
  • Layered Experience: Gradual circulation created a “slow entry” journey from outdoors to interior, enhancing immersion.

“We have always believed that walls are not boundaries, but a collective script written by nature, craftsmanship, and time. Even when no one else was willing to take it on, we chose to complete it ourselves — because this is the very reason Wandering Walls exists.”
